Ivydale School Library, Peckham
The Ivydale School Library project involved the conversion of a vacant classroom within the original Victorian school building into a dedicated library and learning environment. The space had become redundant following the school’s expansion and presented an opportunity to create a facility that had previously been missing from the school.
Construction & Delivery
Working closely with the design team, McGarry Contracts delivered a bespoke timber mezzanine structure, staircase, custom joinery and tailored reading spaces that transformed the room into a vibrant educational resource for pupils.
Bespoke Joinery & Craftsmanship
The project showcases a high level of bespoke craftsmanship throughout. The bookcases, shelving, reading areas and integrated furniture were purpose-made specifically for the library and manufactured to complement the timber mezzanine and staircase.
The quality of the carpentry, joinery, decorating and finishing trades was critical to the success of the project and is clearly visible throughout the completed space.
Community Impact
Royal Recognition
The significance of the project was recognised nationally when Queen Camilla, then Duchess of Cornwall, officially visited Ivydale School to celebrate International Literacy Day and open the new library. The visit highlighted the library’s contribution to literacy and learning and brought national attention to the achievement of the school community and everyone involved in delivering the project.
