Situated within the prestigious Dulwich Village Conservation Area, this project involved the comprehensive renovation, extension and remodelling of a substantial family home that had remained largely unchanged for many years.

Working closely with the client and Open London Architects, McGarry Contracts delivered a complete transformation of the property, combining contemporary living spaces with a careful respect for the character and heritage of its surroundings.

The project commenced with a full internal strip-out and extensive structural alterations throughout the house. Existing floor levels were lowered in key areas to improve ceiling heights and create a greater sense of space, while a substantial rear extension introduced a bright, open-plan kitchen, dining and family area connected to the garden through large-format bespoke glazing and rooflights.

Balancing Character with Contemporary Living

Internally, the house underwent a complete refurbishment, including bespoke walnut stair components, upgraded building services, luxury bathrooms, bespoke joinery and high-quality finishes throughout. Every aspect of the project was considered to create a home that is both practical for modern family life and architecturally refined.

A new loft conversion with a lead-clad dormer provided additional accommodation, while all existing windows and external doors were replaced with carefully detailed new joinery designed to complement the property’s conservation area setting.

Beyond the main house, the project included the construction of a bespoke garden studio together with comprehensive front and rear landscaping. The result is a seamless connection between house and garden, creating a series of spaces that function beautifully both inside and out.
