Designed by Tom Wilson Studio, this project transformed a Victorian family home through a series of carefully connected extensions and alterations that reimagined the relationship between the house and its garden.
Creating Modern Living Spaces with Lasting Quality
Rather than a single extension, the scheme comprised three distinct interventions. A new rear extension and enlarged outrigger reconfigured the ground floor accommodation, while additional alterations introduced greater natural light and improved circulation throughout the home. A bespoke timber-framed garage and workshop completed the project, creating a practical yet highly crafted addition to the rear garden.
The extensive landscaping works were equally important to the overall design. New porcelain paving, clay brick pathways and reconfigured garden spaces create a series of connected outdoor areas for dining, entertaining and family life. A timber pergola provides structure and shade while strengthening the connection between the house and garden.
Externally, the project combines warm natural materials with precise contemporary detailing. Siberian larch cladding, bespoke Accoya garage doors, rouge red zinc roofing and carefully selected brickwork were used throughout to create a cohesive architectural language that complements the original Victorian property while clearly expressing the new additions.
Internally, the focus was on improving functionality and light. Structural alterations opened up key areas of the existing house, creating brighter and more flexible living spaces centred around the kitchen and dining areas. Large glazed openings maximise views of the garden and allow daylight to penetrate deep into the plan.
The project demonstrates how thoughtful design, quality materials and careful craftsmanship can transform an existing Victorian home without losing its character, creating contemporary family living spaces that remain rooted in their original setting.
