Located within the prestigious Dulwich Estate Conservation Area, this project involved the refurbishment of the ground floor and construction of a contemporary rear extension to a substantial detached Victorian family home.
Designed by Simon Whitehead Architects, the scheme transformed the rear of the property to create a spacious open-plan kitchen and dining area that strengthens the connection between the house and garden while respecting the character of the original building.
Transforming Existing Spaces into Modern Homes
A significant structural engineering package formed a key part of the works. Extensive temporary works and substantial structural steelwork were required to support the existing rear outrigger and create the impressive corner opening and large glazed elevation. The engineering solution allowed the space to be opened up dramatically, delivering uninterrupted views to the garden and a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living.
The project combined traditional materials with contemporary detailing. Carefully selected brickwork, specialist stone paving and high-quality finishes complement the original Victorian architecture while introducing a refined modern aesthetic. Internally, bespoke joinery, a contemporary fitted kitchen and thoughtfully integrated lighting complete the transformation.
