Located within the historic Corbett Estate in Eltham, this project involved the extension and refurbishment of a period family home, creating improved living accommodation while respecting the character of the original Victorian property.
The works centred around the construction of a contemporary rear extension together with internal remodelling and improvements to both the ground floor and loft accommodation. The completed design delivers a bright, open-plan kitchen and dining space that connects naturally with the garden while retaining the scale and character of the existing house.
A notable feature of the extension is the bespoke external canopy, supported by carefully detailed oak rafters that introduce warmth and craftsmanship to the rear elevation. Large opening glazed doors provide a strong visual connection between the house and garden while allowing natural light to flood the interior.
Although structurally less complex than some of McGarry Contracts’ larger projects, the work still required careful execution, particularly around the formation of the large structural opening. The steelwork above the glazed doors incorporates a cantilevered design that allows the opening to be maximised while maintaining clean architectural lines.
Particular attention was paid to the quality of the brickwork and external detailing. The brick-on-edge courses, brick matching and overall masonry workmanship are excellent examples of the high construction standards delivered throughout the project.
The loft accommodation was also remodelled, creating additional usable living space together with a new bathroom and improved natural lighting.
The result is a carefully executed extension and refurbishment that enhances the functionality of the home while respecting the character of the surrounding Victorian architecture that defines the Corbett Estate.
