Church Rise, Forrest Hill

Church Rise involved the comprehensive refurbishment, remodelling and extension of a grand Victorian villa in Forest Hill. Working closely with Tom Wilson Studio and the client team, McGarry Contracts delivered a carefully detailed transformation that balanced contemporary architecture with the character and craftsmanship of the original house.

Building the Foundation for a Complete Transformation

The project began with the demolition of a substantial rear conservatory and a programme of significant structural alterations. Extensive temporary works and steelwork enabled the rear of the property to be reconfigured, creating a new kitchen, utility and family living space that connects seamlessly with the garden.

A distinctive corten steel canopy and architectural screen form the centrepiece of the extension. Designed as a contemporary interpretation of the original Victorian veranda, the new structure complements the existing red and yellow stock brickwork while creating a striking architectural identity to the rear elevation.

One particularly rewarding aspect of the project was the discovery of original brickwork concealed beneath later finishes. This was carefully restored and repointed by the McGarry team, becoming a feature element within the completed interior and celebrating the building’s historic fabric.

Internally, the ground floor was extensively remodelled, with reception rooms opened up to create improved flow between traditional and contemporary spaces. New bespoke glazing, carefully detailed joinery, upgraded finishes and refined interior detailing bring natural light deep into the home while preserving the scale and elegance of the original Victorian rooms.

Externally, new landscaping, terraces and garden connections were introduced to strengthen the relationship between house and garden. The result is a highly successful family home that combines contemporary living with the architectural character and craftsmanship of the original Victorian villa.
