Located within the Telegraph Hill Conservation Area, this project involved the extensive remodelling and extension of a Victorian semi-detached home, combining complex structural interventions with carefully detailed contemporary architecture.

Working closely with MEA Studio and the structural engineer, McGarry Contracts delivered a substantial programme of works including basement remodelling, rear and side extensions, major structural alterations and a complete refurbishment of the principal living spaces.

Refined Living Through Thoughtful Design and Quality Craftsmanship

A significant element of the project involved the installation of extensive structural steelwork to support the existing building while creating large open-plan living areas and expansive glazed openings. The existing basement was excavated and lowered by approximately 400mm, increasing head height and transforming the space into a comfortable family cinema room and additional living accommodation.

A bespoke steel structure was carefully formed and finished with specialist polished microcement, creating the seamless appearance of a monolithic concrete beam while preserving the clean architectural lines envisioned by the design team.

One of the defining architectural features of the project is the distinctive “Floating Corner” detail. Originally conceived as a precast concrete element, the design was collaboratively re-engineered on site to achieve the same architectural appearance in a more practical and cost-effective manner.
Throughout the project, particular attention was given to craftsmanship and detailing, from the precision brickwork and structural glazing to bespoke joinery, underfloor heating and high-quality interior finishes. The result is a sophisticated family home that successfully combines innovative contemporary design with the character and heritage of its Victorian setting.

The contemporary extension uses pale-toned brickwork to create a deliberate contrast with the original Victorian house, clearly expressing the new additions while respecting the character of the Conservation Area. Large areas of structural glazing, slim-framed sliding doors and carefully positioned roof glazing introduce natural light deep into the interior and strengthen the connection between the home and garden.
